“Girl with a Pearl Earring” director Paul Webber, together with an as yet unnamed Chinese director, will make a documentary provisionally entitled “Earth: One Amazing Day.” This will be the first feature that is made under UK-China co-production treaty that was announced in 2014.

The documentary is a sequel to “Earth” (2007), which is reportedly the second highest grossing documentary on the natural world ever released. This sequel will focus on a single day on this planet, revealing hundreds of dramatic stories that take place in the natural world every day.

This deal was formally signed on Wednesday, Oct. 22, by Paul Dempsey of BBC Worldwide and Wang Jianjun of Shanghai Media Group, the two production companies involved in producing this film, at a creative showcase in London as part of the official Chinese state visit to the UK. The documentary will be released theatrically in both UK and China in 2017 and will serve as an early model of UK-China co-productions.

Another venture that was announced at the creative showcase was special arrangements for future UK-China co-productions, in which UK filmmakers will be able to utilize Chinese studios to make co-produced films and access the Chinese film market.
