For the fourth year in a row, film and television production brought in more than $1 billion to Ontario’s economy with a record $1.29 billion in 2014, up from $1.14 billion the previous year.
And it’s going to get better. Donna Zuchlinski, film commissioner of the Ontario Media Development Corporation, says production activity is “already off to one of the best first quarters on record” for 2015.
TV production brought in the lion’s share, with $1,049 billion. The biggest growth came through foreign TV movies and miniseries such as Reign and Suits.
And we have Adam Sandler to thank in part for the take from foreign features. His Toronto-shot comedy Pixels, due out in July, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s thriller Crimson Peak, shot at Pinewood Toronto Studios and coming to theatres in October, upped production budgets by more than 42 per cent.
It’s also good news for those working in film and TV industries. The OMDC says they were responsible for 28,000 direct and spinoff jobs, up 2,600 over 2013.
