International film production workshop to be held in Uruguay

Uruguay will host high-profile film industry figures from Europe and Latin America for a training workshop in late November for five Latin American and five European audiovisual professionals.

Trainees at the Nov. 25-30 workshop will attend a second workshop in Locarno, Swizterland, in August 2016, a few days before that city’s international film festival, Uruguayan producer Fernando Epstein, a member of the Puentes Internacional team, told EFE.

The workshops are being supported by the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, or EAVE, an organization that promotes training, project development and the creation of networks for audiovisual producers.

The Latin American phase of Puentes Internacional will take place ahead of Ventana Sur, the region’s most important film market, organized with support from Marche du Film, a project developed by France’s Cannes Film Festival to gain from the knowledge of leading industry figures, Epstein said.

Puentes Internacional participants have a slot in Ventana Sur’s catalog, which provides more visibility for their work.

Among the trainers at the workshop will be France’s Jean des Forêts, who will lecture on script writing; Britain’s Alan Fountain, who has developed projects for the BBC; and Spanish-Colombian Sarah Calderon, who will talk about marketing in the film industry.

Epstein, founder of Uruguay’s Mutante Films, has been involved in the production of box-office hits like “El 5 de Talleres,” a 2015 film directed by Argentine Adrian Biniez.

One of the project’s goals is to expose workshop participants to the “work philosophy” of the industry experts, Epstein said.

Puentes Internacional aims to become “a space for training executive producers,” since education of this kind for professionals at Uruguay’s film schools “was lacking,” Epstein said, adding that registration for the workshop would be open until Oct. 19. EFE
