Film production bills fail

BISMARCK – The almost nonexistent film industry in North Dakota won’t be getting any help from legislators this year.

Two bills that would have helped the film industry in the state failed on Thursday.

House Bills 1420 and 1422 would have offered tax credits to production companies on money spent in the state and appropriated $170,000 for the Department of Commerce to promote North Dakota as a production site.

The bills were put forward by Rep. Marie Strinden (D-Grand Forks), and supported by the North Dakota Filmmakers Association.

Members of that group said North Dakota lacks the infrastructure to attract large or small-scale productions, unlike its neighbors.
